Shmeenee – Eighth

This week’s Torah Reading is called Shemeenee. This year it comes after Pesach. It is also Shabbos Mevorcheem, the Shabbos when we will bless the New Month of Iyar.

In the Torah Reading, as commented several times in previous years, we read about the kosher animals, birds and fish we may eat. This plays a major role in our day to day lives.

It is a law that is called a Chok, a statute, a law with no logical explanation. We may give it one, as many people do, saying that it is health reasons. However, it may be healthy to avoid the prohibited but that is not the reason given. In simple words we are told that we are a holy nation as such the kosher species listed should be our food diet.

Certainly there are many things we learn from the animals, birds and fish we are to avoid. Among the things we learn is that a person should not be a phony, present yourself religious on the outside but really be a horrible person on the inside. That is the pig showing us its split hooves on the outside, saying I am kosher, but inside, nope, no double stomach. No rethinking the actions a person is taking to make sure they are indeed proper according to Torah.

We always need to examine our deeds, our thoughts, our emotions to see that they are proper according to Torah. This is what makes us “kosher”. (and not a pig).

We have just finished celebrating Pesach where we had to get rid of the Chometz, the bread that rises (our big ego). We need to continue to retain a humble, positive character as we conduct our daily lives. It is this behavior that will lead finally to redemption, what Pesach represented and the building of our 3rd Holy Temple. Let is happen very very soon.
