Vayeekra – And He Called

This week we start the 3rd Book of the Torah called Vayeekra – And He Called. Here we have the Al-mighty calling out to Moshe the leader of the Jewish Nation. We note that in the Hebrew the letter Aleph is written in a small form. There are many wonderful reasons given for this.

Aleph is the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet and is also the first letter in the 10 Commandments which begins with the Hebrew word Anochi (I am -referring to the Al-mighty).

Certainly Moshe as leader, was the number 1 man of the Jewish Nation and he is also the number 1 prophet of the Jewish Nation.

When you are number 1 there is a natural tendency to be a bit, how shall we say it, blown up, puffed up. After all you are “numero uno”, the number 1 guy. Moshe, by writing a small Aleph, was showing that he was not “puffed up”. He actually did not want to use that word, he wanted another word which would be similar in spelling but without the Aleph. That word, Vayeekar – And It Happened, means exactly that, it just so happened that the Al-mighty called upon Moshe, nothing special about Moshe. This word is used when the Al-mighty called upon the wicked Bilaam.

The Al-mighty was telling Moshe you are very different and I wish to associate the Aleph, the number 1 letter in the Hebrew Alphabet and the first letter in the 10 Commandments with you. So an agreement was reached that it would be in a small Aleph form.

This serves to tell us that at times we may find ourselves in a stage of greatness and it is important to retain a level of humility. May we all merit to be called upon at times to do great things and yet retain this special level of humility as taught to us by our teacher Moshe.
