Toldos – Generations

This week’s Torah Reading is called Toldos – Generations. It deals with the birth of the twins, Yakov and Eisav. We also have Rosh Chodesh Kislev come up this week, the month of the miracle of Chanuka. (Some might want to say that to survive a twin like Eisav also took a bit of a miracle).

In the Torah Reading we learn near the very beginning that Eisav decides to sell his first born birthright to his twin brother for what Yakov had on his cooking stove. (not sure what culinary school Yakov graduated from, but it must have been good).

This small sort of cute story indeed shows an amazing difference. Eisav shows the value he has for Torah and Mitzvos by willing to sell it for some food. We as Jews are willing to sacrifice our very lives rather than abandon our Holy Torah. Indeed throughout history we have shown this. It is very interesting to note that often this portion is read when we will enter the month of Kislev, the month that we indeed showed we were willing to give our lives for Torah. We celebrate the miracle of Chanuka and our victory of over the Greeks. We regain our Holy Temple and relight our Holy Menorah with pure oil.

Let us continue our tradition of strong commitment to our heritage and soon once again we will have our 3rd Holy Temple and the Menorah shinning brightly in it.
