Devareem – Words

This week begins the 5th book of the Torah, Devareem – Words. This coming Shabbos is actually Tisha B’Av, when our holy temple was destroyed. The fast is pushed off and begins towards evening Saturday night. It is further very interesting to note that this schedule is exactly the same as last year. Tisha B’Av fell out also on Shabbos the previous year in the same portion, Devareem – Words. Thus once again the Fast of Tisha B’Av is pushed off with the hopes that it will indeed this time be finally pushed off forever.

In the Torah Reading we find that Moshe blesses the Jewish Nation. As we begin the 2nd Aliyah, the 2nd part of 7 read on Shabbos, Moshe says “May Hashem, the Al-mighty of your forefathers add to you a thousand times yourselves, and bless you as He has spoken of you.” This indeed makes this portion very special.

During the 40 years Moshe led us we were at times a big pain and burden to him. Yet he looks at the Jewish Nation with a very positive eye and bestows on them a special wonderful blessing. (Keep in mind the bigger the population, the possibility of bigger headaches for the Jewish leader to deal with all the daily problems that can arise). Yet Moshe sees only the good that can come from this blessed, wonderful Nation.

Let us work together in harmony, without improper conflict and improper behavior, towards a unified Nation that can ultimately experience the true beauty and blessings of Shabbos. Shabbos where there is true peace and true harmony. This is symbolized by the Shabbos when it occurs on Tisha B’Av. May it continue into Motzai Shabbos and thus we will see out 3rd Temple built, the symbol of harmony of our Nation and the revealed love of the Al-mighty.
