Chayai Sarah – The Life of Sarah

This week’s Torah Reading is called Chayai Sarah – The Life of Sarah. Check previous blogs on this Torah Reading for explanations of the title. After all, the announcement of her death is what the Torah reading starts off with.

It is also Shabbos Mevorracheem, the Shabbos we bless the New Month.  The New Month coming up is Kislev, the Miracle Month of Chanuka.  When we examine what led up to the Miracle of Chanuka, we will find that the Jewish women played a very prominent part in motivating the men to withstand the Greek culture and to fight back.  Certainly, the first mother of the Jewish Nation, instilled this quality into her future daughters of Israel.

In the Torah Reading we find a strange event.  Eliezer sets up a test to select the proper wife for Yitzchak, Avraham and Sarah’s child.  Why is a test necessary?  Just go into town saying I am looking for the family of Nachor.  Not so difficult.  Meet with the family and tell them there is a nice Jewish (rich) boy available, your cousin, the son of Avraham. That is all it would have taken.

Eliezer had seen that Avraham and Sarah had been tested in their life.  Eliezer was with Avraham when the final test, The Sacrifice of Yitzchak  (Akaidas Yitzchak)was called for.  This is a family that is tested.  He thus felt it was proper to see that the next future mother of Israel would do well in her test.  Rivka of course does.  She displays the will to see to it that Eiezer and his camels are fully watered and looked after.  She is a woman who can look after people and animals to the fullest.  This is indeed a future mother of Israel.

Throughout the history of the Jewish people, the Jewish mothers have stood out in the area of self-sacrifice.  They are prepared to do whatever it takes to continue the legacy of the Jewish Nation.  It is with this strength and courage that Yitzchak grew up in.  It is this courage that prepared the way for the miracle of Chanuka and the rededication of the Holy Temple.  It will be this same spirit and courage that will prepare for the 3rd Holy Temple and final redemption.
