Lech Lecha – Go For Youself

This week’s Torah Reading is called Lech Lecha – Go For Yourself. It covers the lives of our first Father of the Jewish Nation, Abraham and our first Mother of the Jewish Nation, Sarah.

We have previously discussed the name changes of both Avram and Sari to Abraham and Sarah.

There is an additional unique factor that I would like to add.  Avram was given the Hebrew letter Hay to his name, which equals 5 to become Avraham.  Sari was given the same Hebrew letter Hay, which equals 5, to her name to become Sarah.  Note that with Avram, nothing was taken, only a letter Hay was added.  This is not the case with Sari.  The Hebrew letter Yud was taken and replaced with the letter Hay.

Now it is interesting to note that the numerical value of the Hebrew letter Yud is 10.  So in a way, 5 was taken from Sari and given to Avram and that left Sari now with 5.  He becomes Avraham and she becomes Sarah.  Please note both are elevations in this world as their role now becomes very special and Sarah will now be able to give birth to Yitzchak the continuation of Judaism and monotheism.  As Sari, this could not happen.

In Hebrew, the letter Yud reflects the first letter in the Al-mighty’s Hebrew name and the highest spiritual world.  The letter Hay represents the second and also the last letter in the Al-mighty’s four letter Hebrew name.  The last letter Hay represents this physical world.   Only by splitting Sari’s high level of spirituality, symbolized by a Yud, and making it relevant to the physical world, by sharing the two letters of Hay, could a physical child be born.

We thus see a very strong bond indeed between a husband and wife, and the high level of spirituality the wife contributes to a marriage.  We are told that in the Messianic era we will see this higher level of spirituality that each woman possess.  It is no wonder that they have been instrumental in getting out of our previous exile and will be instrumental as well in this present exile.  May we be redeemed soon.
