Devareem – Words

This week begins the 5th book of the Torah, Devareem – Words.  This coming Shabbos is actually Tisha B’Av, when our holy temple was destroyed.  The fast is pushed off and begins towards evening Saturday night.

The Torah reading is of a positive nature.  Moshe is reassuring the Jewish nation that they indeed will go in, conquer and inherit the land of Israel.

Moshe begins this 5th book on Rosh Chodesh Shvat, just 5 weeks before his passing away on the 7th of Adar.  This 5th Book, Devareem, is thus sort of his last will and testament.  The Jewish nation will be left with a capable leader, Joshua, and he will lead the nation into the promised land.

The fact that Moshe began this process on Rosh Chodesh also symbolizes renewal, the month renewing itself and the light beginning to shine again.

The Jewish nation is indeed compared to the moon.  The concept that Tisha B’Av falls out on a Shabbos and is thus pushed off ushers in the hope that soon our state of  exile will also be pushed off and ended and the light of the 3rd Temple will begin to shine.  Let us hope and pray that this be soon.
