Vayakhale – Pikudai – And He Gathered – Accountings

This week’s Torah Reading is a double portion.  It is also the Shabbos when we read Parshos Porah – The Red Heffer.  This is to prepare us to be pure for Pesach.  It is also called Shabbos Chazak, as we conclude the second book of the Torah, Shemos.

In the Torah Reading we find at the very beginning Moshe gathers the entire Jewish Nation and instructs them on the various types of labor that would be required in the making of the Holy Mishkan, its vessels and garments the Kohaneem wore.  Our Rabbis learn from these 39 forms of work and the following verses that describe resting on Shabbos, that these forms of work are prohibited on Shabbos.

On the other side of the coin so to speak, this also teaches us that during the six days that we do work, our work should reflect a level of holiness. This level of holiness should be similar to the concept of Shabbos and .produce a level of holiness that brings about the construction of our Holy Temple.

Just as the book of Shemos, the Exodus ends, with the entire Jewish Nation coming together and doing the work necessary to build a Holy Mishkan, so to this is a lesson in our time.  Our daily lives need to show holiness and we need to come together and do the proper activities that will ultimately lead to the building of the 3rd and final Holy Temple.
