Titzaveh – Command

The Torah Reading for this week is Titzaveh – Command.  As pointed out in previous commentaries on this section, the major topic is the garments worn by the Kohen Gadol, the High Priest and the Kohaneem, regular priests.

Their garments were not their own purchase at a special design store in Europe or 5th Avenue (No they were not made in China).  They were made from donations by the entire Jewish Nation and specially gifted Jewish tailors,  They could only wear these garments during their service to the Al-mighty.  Nothing could be added, or missing.  They could not even wear a band-aid for a small cut.

This all served as a reminder that the Kohaneem, yes they were special, but their purpose was to elevate their Jewish Nation in the service of the Al-mighty. The garments given to them by the Jewish Nation served as this reminder.

We the Jewish Nation are also referred to as Kohaneem in reference to the nations of the world.  We have to remember that our garments are also not really ours.  The money we earned to purchase these garments (okay these can be made in China, or Europe or bought on 5th Avenue) come from the blessings of the Al-mighty.  Our obligation is to uplift the nations of the world by the example we set as a Holy Nation, doing the will of the Al-mighty.  May we succeed in our endeavors and bring about the final building of the 3rd Temple.
