Shofteem – Judges

This week’s Torah Reading is called Shofteem – Judges. We are required to set up judges and yes, police, in our cities. This ensures a proper way of life.

In last year’s Shofteem, we talked about the last commandment in Shofteem. This dealt with the discovery of a dead body on route from one city to the next. The closest city would bring a special offering, an Eglah, Heifer.

It is interesting to note that this law was the last law that Yakov had taught Yoseph before his brothers sold him to Egypt. It was the wagons – Egalot in Hebrew, that reminded Yakov of this when the brothers returned and told him that Yoseph was alive and well in Egypt. This brought about the union of father and son.

We are also in the month of Elul, in Hebrew the letters are Aleph, Lamed, Vav, Lamed. These letters symbolize the love of the Al-mighty for his children, the Jewish Nation. I am (Anee), to My beloved (Lidodee). and My beloved (Vidodee), to Me (Lee).

Thus let us hope, by our leading a proper life, that once again we can be united with our Father, the Al-mighty, with a revealed level of love as shown by the appointment of the final King, Moshiach, and the building of the 3rd Temple.
