Devareem – Words

This week’s Torah Reading begins the 5th book called Devareem – Words. This week is also the beginning of the month of Menachem Av. This is the month that our Temples were destroyed and our exiles, including this one, began.

However, the Torah Reading has optimism in it. Especially the concluding verses. There Moshe reviews what he told Joshua, who is to take over as the leader, that just as Joshua saw the Al-mighty defeat the two kings, Sichon and Og, so would the Al-mighty see to it that Joshua would defeat the kings in the land of Israel. Joshua need have no worry or fear, the Al-mighty would take care of “business”.

In these sad days that we are to experience, we have the promise from the Al-mighty to have no fear and that ultimately we will prevail over our enemies. This optimism plays a role in our survival as a Jewish Nation. Today we are experiencing the pains of exile, even or perhaps especially living in the land of Israel. We need to know that as we are ultimately faithful to the Al-mighty, He will be faithful to us. We need not worry, we will defeat our enemies and eventually have the pleasure of the 3rd Holy Temple.
