Chukas – Statutes

The Torah Reading of Chukas contains the story of the Death of Aaron.  When the approach Hor Hahar, the Al-mighty tells Moshe and Aaron that time has come for Aaron to pass on.  Aaron is to go up Hor Hahar, together with Moshe and Aaron’s son, Elazar.  There Aaron will disrobe and Elazar will assume the position of the Cohen Gadol, the High Priest.  Aaron’s passing away is a very spiritual event.  Moshe asks for the same type of passing away when his time will come.

With the passing away of Aaron, the Jewish Nation goes into a state of morning.  Both the men and the women greatly feel the loss of Aaron.  Aaron was a person who brought peace into Jewish households by settling arguments and giving sound advice to couples.

With the passing away of Aaron, the Clouds of Glory that protected the Jewish Nation went away.  They now were open to attack and indeed shortly after they are attacked by King Arad, a Canaanite.

In Pirkei Avos, Ethics of Our Fathers, it states that we should be students of Aaron, “loving peace and pursuing peace”.  We saw that in Aaron, by his creating peace between husband and wife.  We further saw that just by Aaron’s presence, the Clouds of Glory protected against war and provided peace.

Aaron’s path of pursuing peace amongst the Jewish Nation is a step that leads once again to peace as will be seen when the 3rd Temple will be built.  May it be very, very soon.
