Naso – Count

This week’s Torah Reading is Naso – Count.  On Friday we celebrate Rosh Chodesh Sivan, the month the Torah was given.

It begins with the counting of the remaining two sons of Levi, Gershon and Merari. Kehos had been counted in the previous Torah Reading and given the responsibility of carrying the Ark and the interior Holy Vessels.

One would have felt that the leftovers of the Temple were very secondary and not important.  Along comes an entire new Torah Reading to tell us that the outer parts of the Temple are important and Gershon and Merari are specifically called upon to fulfill this assignment.

Life is composed of more than one level.  Certainly, the inner core of a person is very important, however that does not exempt a person from his outer part.  Thus we find that a Torah Scholar has to also look neat.  In Judaism we have an obligation to work on ourselves in both areas.  The Al-mighty is counting on us to live up to our obligations on all levels.  If we work on ourselves fully, it will result in both the inner and outer parts of the Holy Temple to once again be revealed
