Shmeenee – Eighth

This week’s Torah Reading is called Shmeenee – Eighth. It is also special in that it is Parshas Para, the reading of Para – The Red Heffer. This tells us it is time for purification to get reading to bring the special offering that was brought for Pesach during the time we had the Holy Temples.

Purim was also celebrated right at the very beginning of this week. This allowed the partial destruction of our arch-enemy Amalaik (Haman) and eventually the building of the 2nd Bais Hamikdosh.

Shmeenee – Eighth refers to the 8th day of inauguration of the Temple that was built in the desert. It was now Rosh Chodesh Nissan, the 1st day of the month of Nissan and on this day Aaron and his sons, the Kohaneem, would take over and be the only ones permitted to perform the services in the Temple. In order to perform in the Temple you would have to be a direct descendant of Aaron and his sons.

Perhaps because this event took place on the 8th day of inauguration and on Rosh Chodesh, which symbolizes renewal, (the moon which went dark is again renewed and becomes visible), implies an additional teaching. True, in the physical Temple only the Kohaneem, priests were permitted to serve, but in the “Temple” of each individual Jew, (the body is the “Temple” for the Holy Soul that gives it life) one is permitted and should perform the required services. Those being to fulfill the will of the Al-mighty by learning, doing which we are commanded (The Positive Commandments) and abstaining from those which we are commanded to abstain from (The Negative Commandments). Thus it is interesting to note that the Kosher foods that we may eat (to feed our “Temple”, body) and those we may not eat are in this week’s Torah Reading as well.

By maintaining our personal “Temple”, body, by performing the proper services from the Al-mighty we reconnect or remain connected to that bound that was made on the 8th day, (circumcision). A covenant between Abraham our forefather and ourselves with the Al-mighty that we are indeed His chosen people and He will dwell amongst us in His Holy Temple may it soon be rebuilt so we as a nation will experience renewal and begin to shine once again.
