Terumah – A Portion

This week’s Torah Reading is Terumah. It is also Shabbos Rosh Chodesh Adar Rishon (The New Month of the 1st Adar. As this is a leap year so there are 2 Adars).

In the Torah Reading the Jewish Nation is instructed to contribute various items that would be used for the construction of the Mishkan – Temple, the vessels used and the garments worn.

The construction would require the participation of the Jewish Carpenters’ Union, the Jewish Garment Knitting Union, the Jewish Metal Union, the Jewish Sanitation Union as well as other various Unions. As they were United at Mt. Sinai, so too with the giving and building the Jewish Nation was United with one heart.

It was the positive Union that blessed the Mishkan – Temple.

The first item they were to build was the Aron Hakodesh, the Holy Ark that would contain the Tablets that Moshe brought down. This set the tone and let us know that we need to fill our containers with Torah. The Giving of the Torah united us and it is the Torah that keeps us united.
