Vayaitzai – And He Went Out

The Torah Reading for this week is Vayaitzai – And He Went Out. Towards the end of the Torah Reading, we have Lavan chasing after his family. Yakov has left Lavan, without telling him and has taken his wives, children and his possessions with him. Also taken is some ‘precious idols’ that Lavan is very upset about.

Yakov assures Lavan that they did not take it and curses whoever did take it with a premature death. (Many say that is one of the reasons Rochel, who did take them died on the way).

Why did Rochel take the idols? It was her hope that her father would abandon this silly idol worship and thus she chose a sly way to deal with this. She grew up in a house that was well experienced in sly actions.

We have another Mother of Israel that is also familiar with sly actions. She grew up in the same household and is Rochel’s aunt, namely Rivka, Yakov’s mother and Lavan’s sister. It is Rivka’s scheme that allows Yakov to receive the blessings from his father Yitzchak.

This then is another trait that our Mothers passed on to us to be able to survive exile and overcome the false idols of society and not assimilate.
