Vaeschanan – And I Pleaded

This week’s Torah Reading is called Vaeschanan – And I Pleaded. This week also has the historical event of the destruction of the Holy Temple on the 9th of Av, this year on Tuesday. This Shabbos is also referred to as Shabbos Nachamu, the Shabbos of Comforting – the destruction and loss of the Holy Temple.

It is a week filled with emotions. We also find a unique section, actually there are several, but I refer to the repetition of the Ten Commandments. This is the New Generation that will be led by Yehushua, Moshe’s student. Moshe now is on his last shift so to speak and wishes to give over his final instructions. He thus repeats the Ten Commandments, perhaps the highlight of the Torah and the redemption from Egypt. Of course there still remains one final highlight, the ultimate redemption and building of the 3rd Holy Temple.

Moshe is instructing the Jewish Nation that it is this commitment to the Torah that will lead to the climax of the Exodus from Egypt. Thus Moshe is not only pleading with the Al-mighty, he is also pleading to us to remain faithful to what he brought down from Mt. Sinai, the Ten Commandment written on 2 Tablets. Let us hope that by showing our attachment to the Ten Commandments we will once again be in possession of these 2 Tablets and their home the Aron Hakodesh, the Holy Ark, in the Holy 3rd Temple.
