Korach – Korach

This week’s Torah Reading is Korach. It is also Rosh Chodes Tamuz, the New Month of Tamuz.

The Torah reading starts with the pursuit of honor. Korach, a cousin of Moshe wants to be a main leader as well. Why should Moshe be the main leader and why should Aaron for that matter be the Cohen Gadol, High Priest?
We are all just as great and holy. Joining Korach is Moshe’s favorite duo, Dasan and Aviram. These were the same two that informed Paroh that Moshe had killed an Egyptian and had hassled Moshe whenever they had the chance.

Moshe is the nice guy. That they are still alive is a tribute to Moshe’s humility. Moshe goes even further by extending himself to go and meet with them to cool it and back down from this new revolt. They give Moshe the cold shoulder. Well time has run out for them. Korach, Dasan, Aviram and those that joined in the rebellion are killed by the Al-mighty in miraculous ways.

A person’s big ego can blind him to truth and reality. It may lead a person along a dangerous path and cause his destruction. This is what happened to Korach, Dasan, Aviram and those that joined in. We all need to recognize our true capabilities and limits. We also need to acknowledge our blessings. Korach, Dasan and Aviram were blessed with many positive things. Their egos did not allow them to be content with their blessings and positions. This does not mean a person should not strive for more. We should be always growing and advancing. However it must be done, as Moshe showed us with humility. Those that challenged Moshe were power-hungry and wanted the special attention. These are the wrong reasons. They also denied the Al-mighty’s selection of Moshe and Aaron. This certainly was a death sentence.

This Shabbos is also Rosh Chodesh, the New Month of Tamuz. The moon was also not happy to be the same size originally as the sun. Well jealousy got it to be made smaller. Our motivations have to be based on positive values and then we are indeed growing, if not, we are actually regressing.

Let us all work together to advance our levels of holiness so that we may indeed soon have our 3rd Bais Hamkidosh and Moshe and Aaron in our midst once again.
