Braishees – In the Beginning

It has been a year since my last post.  I was hesitant to go 3 years in a row as this might imply an oath to do this blog every week forever.  Not really the end of the world but who knows what other responsibilities might come that could hinder writing this blog.  Anyhow, I’m back.

We will be dancing during the week of Braishees with the Torah, celebrating Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah. This is always a great way to start the Torah reading and learning from the beginning.

The world we are told was created in 7 days, well 6 days and the Al-mighty collected His pay check and rested on the 7th day that we call Shabbos, ‘rested’.

Why did the Al-might not create the world in 10 days, well 9 days, collect His pay check and rest on the 10th day?  The number 10 is certainly very special.  There are the 10 Commandments for example or a Minyan, a quorom, requires 10 men.  What is so special about 7 and what does it teach us?  Oh yes, and not to forget that with “10 sayings the world was created”.  So why 7 days and not 10, a day for each saying?

I asked my son Yisroel why 7 days and he had a solid answer.  He quoted the “Spiritual Writings” that the world was created with the 6 Sefiros (worlds or levels) and rested on the final Sefira which is called Malchus, Kingdom.  I then asked him about the other 3 Sefiros (yes here again we see the number 10 as there are a total of 10 Sefiros).  He replied that the Sefiros of Chachma, Bina and Das (Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding), the intellectual worlds or levels were not part of the 7 day final, actual creation.

What does this perhaps teach us, that the 7 emotional Sefiros, as they are called, were used and not the 3 intellectual Sefiros, as they are referred to, as well?  This indeed would have given us a total of 10 days.

We truly live in a physical world composed of the physical elements.  We consume actual food from plants, trees, fish, birds and animals.  We are required to do varies forms of physical activity.  The process of the 7 days of creation teaches us to indeed do the physical activities but with positive spiritual emotions representing the 7 emotional Sefiros.  In this way we truly fulfill the ultimate purpose of creation,  bringing our souls down into a physical body to elevate this physical world through our good deeds and listening to the Al-mighty, our Creator.

Hopefully we too will be able to collect our ‘pay check’ for our good deeds with the coming of Moshiach and the building of the 3rd Temple on a 7th day that is called “Fully Shabbos” – “Kulu Shabbos”.
