Vaeschanan – And I Pleaded

This week’s Shabbos is called Shabbos Nachamu.  It comes after Tisha B’Av, (Tuesday), the destruction of the Temple and the exile of the Jewish nation.  The reading from the Prophets, beginning with the word Nachamu, is to provide comfort to the Jewish people.  We actually have 7 readings of comfort during the next 7 weeks.

In the Parsha, Moshe too, is looking for comfort.  He has been banned from entering the land of Israel.  He pleads with the Al-mighty to allow him to see Jerusalem in its splendor and the Holy Temple.  His request is denied.  Moshe is destined to wait and know that a time will come when he and the Jews of the desert, the entire Jewish nation, will see Jerusalem in its splendor and the 3rd Holy Temple.

Like Moshe, we must plead with the Al-mighty to see Jerusalem in the splendor of the 3rd Holy Temple.  We have a guarantee that we will be comforted.  Our Prophets stress this 7 consecutive times.

We are told that our redeemer was born on Tisha B’Av, the day the Holy Temple was destroyed.  Just like Moshe, he too, wants to see Jerusalem in its splendor and the 3rd Holy Temple.

There is a more recent story told of Napoleon, the ruler of France, upon seeing the Jewish people mourn the destruction of the Temple and their exile, announce that this nation will once again see their return to Jerusalem (in its splendor and the 3rd Holy Temple).

Our mission is to continue to plead with the Al-mighty and find comfort in knowing that very soon we, together with Moshe, will be anserwed.
