Devareem – Words

This week begins the 5th book in the Torah, Devareem.  Here, too, we find a clear connection to Bamidbar – In the Midbar – Desert.  Midbar is spelled in Hebrew; Mem, Daled, Beis, Raish. Devareem is spelled in Hebrew; Daled, Beis, Raish, Yud, Mem. The difference is the additional letter Yud.

The Yud is the 10th letter in the Hebrew Alphabet.  Thus the Yud represents the number 10, specifically, the 10 Commandments and its extension, the Torah.  We again see the emphasis on speaking Words of Torah to ensure our survival as we leave the Desert to enter and conquer the land of Israel.

The 5th Book has a special unique feature.  Rather than the Al-mighty dictating and Moshe writing, as was the case in the previous 4 books. Moshe speaks and writes this on his own, albeit prophetically.  Thus the 5th Book involves more the actions of a human, Moshe.  It is Moshe who now is expressing on earth the “Living Words” of the Al-mighty.  This gives the ability of the Jewish nation to make the land of Israel and the entire world a special place of revealed holiness.

This concept comes at a special time.  This Shabbos precedes the fast of Tisha B’Av which commemorates the destruction of the Holy Temple and the exile from Israel – the loss of revealed holiness.

Through Devareem, our speaking the holy words of Torah, we can again establish the revealed holiness in the land of Israel – the 3rd Temple and holiness in the entire world.
