Shemeenee – Unity Transcends

This week’s Torah reading is Shemeenee.  On this day, Rosh Chodesh Nissan the Temple was set up and ready for action.  On that day 10 crowns were taken.  Among the 10 special things that took place for the first time was the Blessing of The Cohaneem.

Rosh Chodesh Nissan, the eighth day(Shemeenee) and the Blessing of the Cohaneem play a vital role in redemption.  Rosh Chodesh symbolizes the renewal of the moon, the Jewish nation in renewal emerging from darkness and exile.  The eighth day represents the bound between the Al-mighty and the Jewish nation, circumcision, that transcends the seven days of creation.  The survival of the Jewish Nation transcends the natural laws of creation as nation after nation has fallen by the wayside over a period of time especially without a homeland and constant persecution. The Blessing of the Cohaneem calls for a bond of love between fellow Jews.  It is this bond that will take us out of our present exile.  A father is most gratified when he sees the love his siblings have for one another.  Similarly, the Al-mighty is most pleased when He sees this love manifested amongst His chosen nation.   The Blessing of the Cohaneem stresses this love for one another.

We have just ended celebrating the Exodus of Egypt which took place in the month of Nissan.  We anxiously await the Exodus from the final exile to fulfill or closing statement in the Hagada – “Next Year in Jerusalem”.
